PSM provides structural engineering services to clients worldwide from our office in Seattle. We’ve provided successful structural solutions for owners, architects, and government organizations since 1924.
We understand what our clients want: public safety above all, followed by economical solutions to their particular structural needs. To this, we add creativity, experience, and responsive, rapid service through all phases of design and construction.
We are active in both the public and private sector. Our public sector work includes K-12 Education, Colleges and Universities and other Institutional work.
Our private sector work includes medical facilities, office and commercial buildings, churches and design of industrial facilities, especially for the food processing and distribution industry.
We use Building Information Modeling for new construction projects. Our services using BIM can range from simple models for visualization and production of 2-D documents, to more detailed models for use in detailing packages.
We provide a variety of services for the analysis and rehabilitation of existing facilities. We have been active in seismic remediation work for over 40 years, beginning with early work for the Seattle School District.
We are frequently involved in the rehabilitation of other facilities that have deteriorated because of environmental exposure, including food storage facilities and waterfront structures.
One of PSM’s largest areas of expertise is providing structural design for design/build teams, usually contractor-led. Because of our experience on these teams, we can rapidly focus in on critical design issues, and, come up with solutions for evaluation by the team. During construction, we understand and respond to the need for quick answers and solutions to field issues. We are able to redesign rapidly if unforeseen field conditions require an alternate approach or solution.
We work closely with contractors in the design of temporary structures, including excavation shoring, crane support, and analysis and design for temporary support of permanent structures.
PSM also uses Building Information Modeling for our projects. BIM aids the contractor by helping in the estimating, detailing, and field construction process. We can build a model for the contractor’s use if no model is used during design.
PSM works directly with owners of facilities, both in the private sector (for profit and non-profit), and institutional owners in the public sector. Facility owners look to us to ensure that structural work for any new or existing building is done to reflect their priorities.
We have extensive experience in rapidly providing focused and useful analysis and reports for existing structures for seismic hazards and general structural condition issues.
We work with facility owners regularly to provide structural design services to add mechanical equipment to rooftops and to house medical and refrigeration equipment.
Owners recommend our presence on a design team for new facilities not only because of our experience and reputation but also because our cost-conscience design saves money. Our high level of services adds to the effectiveness of all team members to reach project goals.
In addition to structural design for all types of structures in the public and private sector, we have developed special capabilities in rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of existing buildings, upgrading buildings for seismic forces, and providing Design-Build services.
Additional areas of expertise include design for the Food Processing and Distribution Industry, where we have a 60 year history, and structural work for the Telecommunications Industry, where we have provided services for over 20 years.
PSM has over 70 years of experience in providing structural engineering for local school districts and colleges, including new buildings, remodeling projects, and seismic analysis and upgrade services.
Ron Martinson has practiced structural engineering for over 40 years. He has been responsible for the design of a wide variety of projects, including design of new health care, industrial, and education facilities. In addition to his expertise in seismic upgrade and design, he is an expert in Historic Preservation, and recently served a 5 year term on the City of Seattle’s Landmark Preservation Board. Mr. Martinson is well known for his deep knowledge of all aspects of design and construction technologies, and his ability to interact effectively with all project team members.
Muni Vimawala successfully collaborates with developers, owners, architects, contractors and other structural engineers to develop effective structural solutions. His particular interest is to find innovative and optimized solutions to structurally challenging projects while being client oriented, responsive and collaborative. His goal is to make the whole experience of structural engineering a pleasant one, for all involved, while delivering a successful final product. He varies his role to suit the client’s perspective with the knowledge that PSM’s success lies in understanding our relevance to a particular project and conforming to it to the best of our abilities.
David Stubbs is responsible for PSM’s work in Food Processing and Distribution, Industrial Work, and K-12 Education Projects. Mr. Stubbs also leads PSM’s design-build focus. His enthusiasm for client service and rapid response, while providing economical, cost efficient structures of all sizes, along with his team-oriented approach to projects, adds great value to his client’s work, and has earned the company many loyal, repeat clients.
