Gas Works Towers Safety Upgrades

The Seattle Parks Department asked PSM to evaluate the two tallest towers at the south end of Gas Works Park. The towers serve as an attractive target for spontaneous climbing, and there have been multiple instances of injuries in the years since the park was opened. Seattle Parks wants the public to have direct access to the base of the towers.

An expert climber on our staff evaluated various potential routes that climbers might use. We then identified possible elimination of these routes, through removal of various elements and barriers of various types.

As this park is a national and local landmark, our recommendations needed to be sensitive to Landmark Status. We are currently preparing a presentation to the Seattle Landmarks Board. After board approval, we will prepare final drawings for the needed upgrades.
